AbstractAbstract. In the last decades, the State of Mato Grosso has been suffering an intense process of vegetation cover conversion. This fact associated with large biodiversity of the region, implies in the immediate need of conservation plans. However, conservationist actions are not easily to accomplish, because of impediments such as the scarcity of financial resources and the execution time. Aiming to propose conservation plans that are suitable to the developing countries conditions, a model elaboration for indicating priority areas and strategies for biological conservation is pursued. The parameters considered for the model development are: ecosystems representativeness, value of conservation and cost of opportunity. In this study, the analysis of the representativeness of vegetal formations in the Conservation Units (UCs) system of Mato Grosso State was performed based on integration of vegetation maps, Conservation Units, and Indian Territories. The results show the low representativeness of the different vegetal formations in the UC´s, indicating the need for more Conservation Units in the state. Human activities, such as soybean plantation inside the Conservation Units were another problem detected. By including the Indian Territories in the analysis, the representativeness showed a remarkable improvement. However, this fact does not assure the proper conservation of the analyzed vegetal formations.
